How spam filtering works
Incoming Mail Passes Through the Filter Before It Reaches Your Server.
SpamExperts sits between the wider internet and your destination email server. The domain's mail-routing records direct incoming messages to the filtering layer first.
1. Email is sent to your domain
A sender addresses a message to a mailbox on the protected domain, such as name@yourbusiness.com.
2. MX records route mail to SpamExperts
The domain's MX records direct incoming email to the SpamExperts filtering service before it reaches the destination mail server.
3. SpamExperts analyses the message
The filtering platform evaluates incoming mail for spam, phishing, malware and other unwanted or suspicious characteristics.
4. Approved email continues to your mail server
Messages accepted by the filtering service are forwarded to the destination mail system that hosts the domain's mailboxes.
5. Filtered messages remain subject to policy and quarantine controls
Messages classified as unwanted can be rejected, quarantined or handled according to the SpamExperts configuration and the controls available to the account.
When the destination server is unavailable
Filtering Can Queue Incoming Mail While Delivery Is Retried.
Incoming Filtering includes email-continuity behaviour that can hold incoming mail when the destination server is temporarily unavailable and retry delivery according to the service. This is not a guarantee of unlimited storage or uninterrupted mailbox access.
Compatible mail environments
The destination must be able to receive approved mail forwarded by SpamExperts.
Manual DNS where required
External DNS records must be updated through the provider that controls the domain.
Supported cPanel automation
MarketConnect can save existing MX records and apply SpamExperts filtering records for supported cPanel accounts.
Quarantine & message control
Filter Aggressively Without Making Legitimate Mail Invisible.
Spam filtering sometimes requires review. Quarantine and message controls provide a place to inspect held mail and manage filtering decisions rather than treating every classification as irreversible.
Review held messages
Use the SpamExperts interface to review messages available in quarantine according to your account permissions.
Release legitimate mail
Where the message and account controls allow it, release a legitimate message that was held by the filtering system.
Allow and block rules
Use the available sender, recipient or filtering controls to refine how known mail sources should be handled.
Review filtering activity
Use available logs and reporting to understand how incoming mail has been classified and handled.
Spam filtering questions
Email Spam Filtering Questions Before You Protect a Domain.
Clear answers about incoming filtering, spam and phishing, MX records, quarantine, continuity and how SpamExperts works with your existing email service.
Email spam filtering analyses incoming messages before normal delivery and identifies mail that appears unwanted, suspicious or malicious. A hosted filtering service such as SpamExperts can sit in front of the destination mail server so approved messages continue to the normal mailbox environment.
SpamExperts Incoming Filtering is designed to identify unwanted and malicious inbound email including spam, phishing, malware, ransomware and virus-related threats. No filtering system should be treated as a guarantee that every harmful message will always be detected.
Not necessarily. Incoming Filtering normally works in front of the existing destination mail service. Your domain's mail routing sends incoming email through SpamExperts first, and approved messages are then forwarded to the mail server that hosts the mailboxes.
MX records tell sending mail systems where email for your domain should be delivered. SpamExperts Incoming Filtering needs those records to route inbound messages through the filtering service before approved mail continues to the destination server.
For supported cPanel hosting accounts, WHMCS MarketConnect can automate the required SpamExperts MX configuration. If automatic DNS changes are not available for the domain's hosting or DNS environment, the required MX records need to be applied through the provider that manages the domain's DNS.
SpamExperts provides quarantine and message-management controls for mail that has been filtered according to the service configuration. Where the relevant permissions allow it, users or administrators can review held messages and release legitimate mail.
Incoming Filtering includes email-continuity behaviour that can queue incoming mail when the destination server is temporarily unavailable and retry delivery according to the service. This should not be interpreted as a guarantee of unlimited storage or uninterrupted mailbox access.
Incoming Filtering checks messages arriving at your domain. Outgoing Filtering checks mail leaving the protected sending environment and helps address abusive sending and reputation risks. Email Archiving preserves retrievable copies of messages where that service is included. Compare the wider GrabbyHost Email Security page when you need more than inbound spam filtering.
