How to Update DNS Records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT)

When to edit DNS records instead of nameservers.

If you want to keep your domain's nameservers as they are (for example, they're managed elsewhere) but still point specific parts of it to GrabbyHost — like your website or email — you can edit individual DNS records instead.

Open DNS management.

In your client area, go to Domains > My Domains, select the domain, and open its DNS Management tab. If your domain uses GrabbyHost's nameservers, changes here take effect on our DNS; if it uses another provider's nameservers, make the changes there instead.

Common record types.

• A record — points a domain or subdomain to a server's IPv4 address. Used to connect your domain to your hosting account.
• CNAME record — points a subdomain to another domain name instead of an IP address (for example, pointing www to your root domain).
• MX record — tells the internet which mail servers handle email for your domain, and in what priority order.
• TXT record — stores text data used for verification and email authentication, such as SPF, DKIM, and domain-ownership checks.

Add or edit a record.

1. Choose the record type.
2. Enter the host/name (use @ for the root domain, or a subdomain like "shop" for shop.yourdomain.com).
3. Enter the value it should point to — your hosting IP address for an A record, found in your welcome email or hosting service overview.
4. Set the TTL (how long the record is cached) if asked — the default is usually fine.
5. Save the record.

Give it time.

DNS changes can take from a few minutes up to a few hours to update everywhere, so avoid making repeated changes in quick succession while you wait.
