Choosing the right hosting plan up front saves you from a slow site now or a stressful migration later. Here's how to think about it, and the signs that tell you it's time to move up.

Hosting Types, From Smallest to Largest

  • Shared Hosting – Your site shares server resources with other accounts. The most affordable option and a good fit for new websites, blogs, portfolios, and small business sites with moderate traffic.
  • VPS (Virtual Private Server) – You get dedicated resources (CPU, RAM) on a virtualized server, with root access for full control. Suited to growing sites, custom software requirements, or several websites that need more headroom than shared hosting allows.
  • Dedicated Server – An entire physical server for your use alone. Built for high-traffic sites, resource-intensive applications, or businesses with strict performance and compliance needs.

Signs You Should Upgrade

  • Your site is loading slowly, especially during traffic spikes, even though your code and images are optimized.
  • You're hitting resource limits – cPanel or your client area shows you consistently near your CPU, memory, entry process, or storage limits.
  • You're getting intermittent 500 errors or \"resource limit reached\" messages under normal traffic.
  • You need root access to install custom software, specific PHP extensions, or server-level configuration that shared hosting doesn't allow.
  • You're running multiple sites or a store that has outgrown the storage, database, or email allowances of your current plan.

How to Check Your Current Usage

  1. Log in to your GrabbyHost client area and open the service you want to check.
  2. On cPanel, check the usage meters on the sidebar of the main dashboard (disk space, bandwidth, inodes).
  3. On DirectAdmin, check the usage summary on the main panel page.
  4. If you're regularly above 80% on any resource, that's a good early signal to start planning an upgrade rather than waiting for it to become a problem.

How to Upgrade or Change Your Plan

  1. Log in to your GrabbyHost client area and go to Services.
  2. Select the service you want to change and look for the Upgrade/Downgrade option.
  3. Choose the new plan and review the prorated price difference before confirming.
  4. Most shared-to-shared and VPS tier upgrades apply with little to no downtime; moving between hosting types (for example shared to VPS) may involve a migration – open a support ticket beforehand if you're unsure, and our team can advise on the smoothest path.

Good to Know

You don't have to wait until something breaks to upgrade. If your traffic is trending upward or you're launching a campaign, product, or feature that will increase load, upgrading proactively avoids downtime when it matters most. If you're not sure which plan fits your situation, open a support ticket with your current usage and goals and our team can recommend the right fit.
