How to Back Up and Restore Your Website

Regular backups are your safety net against accidental deletions, failed updates, or a compromised site. This guide covers how to create a manual backup in cPanel and how to restore from one.

Creating a Backup in cPanel

1. Log in to cPanel.
2. Under the Files section, click Backup (or Backup Wizard, depending on your cPanel theme).
3. Under "Full Backup" or "Partial Backups," choose what you'd like to back up:
   • Home Directory – your website files.
   • MySQL Databases – individual database backups.
   • Full Backup – everything, including files, databases, and email accounts.
4. Click Download next to the item you want, or generate a full backup and download it once it's ready.
5. Save the downloaded file somewhere safe — ideally on your computer or a cloud storage service, not only on the server.

Restoring from a Backup

1. Go back to the Backup section in cPanel.
2. Under "Restore a Home Directory Backup" or "Restore a MySQL Database Backup," choose the backup file from your computer.
3. Click Upload to begin the restore.

Automating Backups

For sites that change frequently, consider a WordPress backup plugin (such as UpdraftPlus) that can automatically back up to cloud storage on a schedule, in addition to the manual backups covered above.
